We need food. It is the most primal of all necessities. It is so basic in fact, that most creatures spend the expanse of their time on earth searching for and consuming food. There was a time, not so long ago, when we humans were equally preoccupied with finding nourishment.
In these ‘modern’ times we’ve delegated the growing, producing and preparation of food to a relative few, we’ve freed up our minds and hands to do other things. I’m not saying this is totally bad. I guess you could argue we have more time to do meaningful things like volunteering at hospice. Although, most of us choose to preoccupy ourselves with less noble things like the 3 minutes I just wasted reading stupid posts on my Facebook wall. Although I did get a good corn relish recipe. My point is this…we’ve crossed a not so fine food line. Food has gone from sustenance to novelty. This is really dangerous because it has lost its value. We’ve freed ourselves so much from food that we’ve forgotten what food is and those folks we’ve put in charge of our food manipulate and augment in grotesque and alarming ways. Continue reading »
