Here they are – The top five (as I see it) wrongfully accused foods.

  1. Raw Milk
  2. Butter
  3. Coconut Oil
  4. Salt
  5. Red Meat

Today we’re going to look at the trials and tribulations of good old-fashioned raw milk.  Well, after my last post about Organic Pastures  I’m on a roll!

Date incarcerated: Unknown.  The smearing of raw milk’s reputation gradually progressed between the late 1800s and was in full swing by the 1930′s. Continue reading »

I do!  I love thinking about food.  I love shopping for food.  I love cooking food. I love eating food.  If I’m going to leave the house for more than an hour I bring food with me.  You know, just in case I make a wrong turn somewhere and end up in a neighborhood I don’t recognize and my GPS insists on making me turn right onto that ‘closed for construction’ street and no matter what I do,  it keeps wanting me to go back to that closed street, the one I don’t really want to go down anyways because I think it takes me into a really bad part of town and that snooty little computer isn’t programmed to understand that and no matter how much I yell at her she keeps saying “recalculating” in that really condescending voice.  You know that British chick voice that my husband likes so much.  I don’t know why he like it, but I’m kinda jealous.  Now I’m driving around in circles and thank goodness I have a snack-you know, just in case that happens.  Continue reading »

It wasn’t long ago that raw milk was a common medicinal treatment for many ailments from diabetes to cancer.  Even today, milk therapy is successfully used in  Germany.  If you’re worried about the safety of the good stuff, get over it by visiting the campaign for real milk.  You’ll see all the dangers of pasteurized milk and how safe real raw milk is.

Here is my first ‘Friday Farm Feature: Claravale Dairy’.   Ron Garthwaite  and his wife Collette Cassidy purchased the dairy in 1996 from Kenneth Peake.    They moved their Cows from Los Gatos  to Santa Cruz County, where they enjoyed a rocky existence for almost 11 years.  Now they are (I hope comfortably settled) in San Benito County.    They  are the smallest dairy in the state with around 50 head of Jersey Cows, this makes them extraordinarily unique in so many ways.  Those jumbo dairies have as many as 3,000 head of Holstein Cows and milk all day long!

This must be a labor of love, a love of real healthy milk, a love of sustainable and responsible farming and a love of the rich agricultural history of our beautiful state of California. Continue reading »

Caltrate has an ad out right now, it shows women consuming enormous amounts of milk, almonds and broccoli to get the amount of calcium they need.  They say that this grotesquely giant amount of food would be necessary because women need 3800 mg of calcium a day.   Luckily Caltrate has come along to fulfill our never ending need for the mineral.
